Brand Recall: Do Catchy Tunes in Commercials Work?

Music in commercials.  Does a familiar or catchy tune really help the brand?  Currently, I am listening to Spotify, and “Baby Come Back” just started playing.  As soon as I heard the intro, I thought of the Swiffer commercial with the mop that couldn’t outperform the Swiffer Wet Jet.  This happens to me on a regular basis; I hear a song, I remember the commercial, and I remember the brand!

This past Tuesday, I was watching television and the new Nissan Altima commercial was the first spot I saw.  I couldn’t find the actual commercial, but if you haven’t seen it yet, here is the song that accompanies it:

The song playing during the commercial is JJ Fad’s “Supersonic”.  I had never heard it before, but it’s one of those that you can’t help but remember.  Whenever a song is stuck in my head, I have to download it; otherwise, I’ll just mumble the wrong lyrics and get annoyed with myself.  After I added the song to my Spotify playlist, it came on when I hit the shuffle button.  I decided to share the song on Twitter, and to my surprise I received a mention from the group (See image below).

So, I want to know, am I the only person who remembers a brand based on the song played during their commercial?

I saw this commercial, and was hoping to post it on Facebook for my friends. I thought this commercial was aimed at people my age, as this song came out when I was in elementary school and was really popular. I thought it was a good way to hit the 30-40 year old demographic.

But catchy songs do not always resonate. This one did work for me.

Completely agree. The commercial looked fun and inviting. I’ll have to recreate this the next time I’m out with friends.

Nope I was addicted to Girlfriend by Phoenix for the longest it was everywhere, and of course you had to have every song that was on the new dancing ipod commercials back in the day.
