These days all I hear about are apps, apps, apps, and more apps. As of now, applications for different mobile operating systems (i.e. iOS, Android, and BlackBerry OS) are driving the cell phone market. You name it, you bet there is an application for it. The Apple iPhone has an advantage over other mobile OS simply because it has a bigger app market. There are apps for just about anything you can think of. Need to turn on your Christmas lights? There’s an app for it! Need a dog whistle to attract random dogs? There’s an app for it. The list goes on and on.
There are several unique applications that are called “QR readers.” QR codes are a two-dimensional bar code that holds various information about businesses and are often used to get discounts and special promotions at venues. The QR code below is a screen capture from the Capital Metro website. Cap Metro is the transportation authority in Austin, Texas and uses these codes to provide real-time information about when a bus or train is supposed to arrive. As stated below the codes are “sometimes promotional.” Although the codes are usually used to acquire basic information about businesses, they are also being used for sales promotions.
Many brands often post QR codes to social networking sites such as Facebook and/or Twitter to induce trial purchases. The concept of using QR codes is quite new, but there is no doubt that we will be seeing more of these in the future.
